Schweizer Regierung unterstützt großzügig den Infrastrukturaufbau der GEA Chelonia Foundation in Bulgarien

Swiss Government supports generously the development of infrastructure of the GEA Chelonia Foundation in Bulgaria

This is a report about a visit of chelonian experts from the Swiss chelonian society (SIGS) to the GEA Chelonia Foundation (GCF) in Banya, Bulgaria. They had been invited for expert consulting on terms of the Swiss government which implemented a program sponsoring co-operation with countries within the European Union since the program is aimed to develop the infrastructure of the foundations tortoise center. Besides the practical counseling within the center the program contained extensive field excursions in order to gain a comprehensive understanding of conservation activities along the Black Sea coastal regions and especially about the areas in which the activities of the GCF took or still take place in terms of translocating and monitoring native tortoises, Testudo hermanni boettgeri

During our stay, excursions to Bolata valley (northern part), the Ropotamo (southern part), Irakli and to Kap Emine took place during which a rich flora, insect-, arachno- and herpetofauna had been observed and the official inauguration of the program took place under the presence of the Swiss ambassador to Bulgaria Ms. Regina Escher
and Dimitar Nikolow
, the major of Burgas, the capital of the district in which the GCF is located. The official part ended with a visit of the Swiss ambassador and some of her representatives in the tortoise center and the release of six head started tortoise in a near tortoise habitat at the south slope of the Irakli basin which is included in the Natura 2000 conservation program of the EU.
